Wilderness State Park, Michigan

The Saab 9-4X weighs a hefty 4,400 lbs with the 3.0i engine. The Aero is even heavier and can tip the scale up to 4,700 pounds. I owned a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer for a couple of years and it had the typical ride of an SUV. Heavy, pretty slow, vague steering, an engine that ran out of breath beyond 4K rpm and a bit of a mushy suspension. So my expectations of a crossover with similar size and weight were not that high.

While it still is a heavy vehicle, it sure feels pretty quick. The engine likes to rev and has pretty good power all the way up to 5.5 to 6K rpm. It is also a slow-revving and quiet engine when you want it to be. At 55 mph - 90 km/h, you can't hear the engine at all, mostly because it only turns at 1600 revolutions per minute. And that's quite impressive as well.

Check out the video for 0-60 mph in about 8 seconds: link

The brake pedal feel is typically Saab and harder than many other vehicles, especially from Asian origin. I am used to it and prefer it that way. I haven't made any panic stops or did any other brake testing but the brakes are up to the task of stopping the 9-4X.

Steering feel is excellent. The ratio is just perfect and the hydraulic power assist has the usual natural feel I have come to know from my 9-5 and 9-3. It probably requires more effort to turn the steering wheel compared to other crossovers but this gives the feel you're actually driving the 9-4X. The turning radius is much smaller than I expected and feels similar to the first generation 9-5. And that's a great accomplishment for the size of the vehicle. I expected the 18" tires with taller sidewalls not to be very communicative but they give a nice feel of the road without feeling soft.

UP of Michigan looking towards Canada

Many journalists wrote about driving the 9-4X and how it feels more like driving a car than a mid-sized crossover. And they are completely right. Even in the base trim without the adjustable Aero suspension, it actually is fun to drive. The suspension is firm but still soaks up bumps and potholes quite nicely. As a matter of fact, the suspension could be just a bit softer for regular driving on Michigan roads. But the better handling is worth the firmer suspension.

It is surprising the suspension feel is so good considering the size of the wheels and tires. The 9-4X 3.0i in base and Premium trim is equipped with Michelin Latitude Tour HP all-season tires 235/65HR18. You would think the tall sidewall wouldn't be good for handling so it is all the more surprising how well Saab tuned the suspension. The Latitude tires have a 55K warranty but time will tell how good they are going to hold up.

I purchased this 9-4X from a Saab/Cadillac dealership and the salesman said the 9-4x is much more fun to drive than the SRX. I should test drive one of those some day to see how it compares to the 9-4X.

Noise comfort is excellent as well. There hardly is any wind noise even over 70mph and you can't hear any tire noise either. It's the quietest Saab I have owned so far. These are the little things that make all the difference.

Fuel economy

I have been keeping track of all fill-ups since I bought the 9-4X. In the last 4,500 miles, I am getting an average of 20.3 mpg with regular fuel. At the current prices, regular fuel has a price advantage to premium of about 1.5 mpg. When you compare this to the 25.6 mpg average of my 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero, the adjusted 21.8 mpg of this 9-4X seems very reasonable, considering it is much heavier and taller.
Equipment

The base Saab 9-4X comes with a nice list of standard features.

You can get the Power package on the base for $1,385 and you get quite a lot of features for the money.

Driver's seat, mirrors and pedals memory

Electrically adjustable pedals

Heated front seats

Auto-dimming interior mirror

Power tailgate

Rear-view camera

The Premium model costs $3,870 more than the base model ($2,485 more than the Power package) and includes all equipment from the Power Package plus:

High-pressure headlight washers

Premium alloy wheels (basically the same 18" as the base but different finish)

Ambient lightning

Ventilated front seats

Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Keyless passive entry

Remote start

Universal remote garage door opener

Power passenger front seat

10-speaker Bose Audio system with 5.1 surround sound (base system has 7 speakers)

Auto-dimming outside mirrors

Power folding mirrors

The Technology Package for $1,350 includes Bi-Xenon cornering headlights and Parking Assistance. Rear seat audio and video is $1,845 and the Infotainment Navigation system $2,395. For complete details about equipment, you can download the brochure here: link

Ambient lighting provides a few extra interior lights in the foot wells. There also is a faint green spotlight in the overhead console which illuminates the center console just slightly. The door handles also have a faint glow. I first thought it was going to be annoying but it gives a luxurious feel when driving in the dark. It gives a sense of the interior without being distracting.

<img src="http://saabworld.net/attachments/f16/7058d1329364715-i-thought-air-force-one-cool-look-what-i-saw-saab-9-4x-climbing.jpg" border="0" alt="Name: Saab 9-4X climbing.jpg

I used to have ventilated front seats in my Saab 9-5 and they are very nice to have when it is hot and humid outside. They don't seem to have the same kind of cooling power as the 9-5 but they also are not as loud. It is definitely a nice upgrade in the 9-4X.

Keyless passive entry is something that I never thought I needed but it has become a feature that is now difficult to live without. You can leave the key in your pocket and the door will automatically unlock when you pull the handle. Locking the 9-4X only requires touching the door handle. This is in addition to the standard lock and unlock buttons on the remote. I usually don't like have anything in my pockets when I drive but the remote is small enough so it doesn't bother me at all. If you leave the remote in the 9-4X and exit, the horn will sound twice. You can't lock the car if there is still a remote inside.

The auto-dimming mirrors are another feature I can't live without anymore. You sometimes forget you have this as optional equipment until you drive another car that doesn't have it. I do not have the package with parking sensors on mine but the rearview camera with the monitor built in the rearview mirror is a great alternative and works just as good as parking sensors. There is quite a large blindspot towards the back so the camera is pretty essential for backing up.

Remote start has always been a bit controversial for me. They say it is best for the engine to start and drive away. However, I do prefer to have the engine running a few minutes before I start driving just to get all the fluids going and defrost the rear window. The remote start makes that very easy so you won't have to get into the car, start the car (requires pushing the brake pedal), get out and clear ice or snow from the windows. I don't use it to let the engine idle for 15 minutes to warm up the interior.

All the extras are not necessary for enjoying the 9-4X or any other modern car but the toys are nice to have. And many of them are very useful as well.

Although reported a day or so earlier, it has now been officially confirmed that the Saab museum cars will be publically displayed in a museum.

Saab's bankruptcy administrator attorneys issued a memo on January 13, 2012 informing the public that the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan, which had closed at the end of 2011, was to have its more than 100 car collection liquidated. The administrators solicited bids from the public as well as for the entire museum collection as a whole. The deadline for submitting a bid was only a week later, on January 20th. The City of Trollhättan submitted a bid for the entire collection but that the bid was reportedly too low compared to the sum of individual bids.

Saab Bilmuseum

The Delphi Law Firm, which is sharing administration of bankruptcy, has sent e-mails to individual bidders informing them that a revised bid by the City of Trollhättan in cooperation with funding from Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Memorial Fund (a foundation) and Saab AB (aircraft company) was successful made. The Saab museum cars are now generally safe from being disbanded and sold. The city and West Götaland region will pay for the cost of operation of a museum and the Wallenburg foundation and Saab AB will pay SEK 28 million (approximately US$4.3 million). Formal approval from the county council to operate a museum is required.

The e-mail stated:

Transporting a collectable car to the U.S. from Sweden

I investigated bidding for museum cars. I was informed that winning bidders had to pick up cars within days though it might be possible to store the cars nearby for a few days. Many of the museum cars are not drivable. This would mean that a flat bed towing truck had to be located. I was able to locate a towing company to transport a car from the museum to the Port of Gothenburg. I also identified some potential shipping companies and port handling agents. Shipping a non-running car in a 20 foot shipping container might be the most practical way. One should be prepared to have ramps as shipping containers are not flush with the ground. The cost of shipping a shipping container from Gothenburg to the U.S. West Coast is approximately $3000. I estimated the total cost of shipping to be somewhat over $4000. There are many shippers. Wallenius Wilhemsen is one large shipper that has a fleet of roll on roll off ships suited for drivable cars. Hapag Lloyd is one of many shippers that transport containers.

I also learned of various U.S. customs regulations for importing cars. A car must meet safety and emissions standards unless it is more than 25 years old. The threshold for cars entering Canada is 15 years old.

Researching the steps needed to ship a car to the U.S. was not in vain. I now have a better understanding of what has to be arranged to ship a collectable car.

Saab Car Museum collection
The Saab Car Museum has over 100 Saabs in its collection. The Delphi Law Firm furnished a summary of the collection. The written summary included two photographs for most of the cars.

Although it’s hard to advocate bankruptcy as a way to drum up business, it seems to be working in the case of Saab . According Dataium, which tracks vehicle research across all automotive Web sites, online searches for Saab vehicles jumped 10 percent following the company’s December 19 bankruptcy filing.

Moreover, the number of first-time buyers shopping the Saab brand increased between 50 and 100 percent each day for the following two weeks. That figure is even more impressive when you considered that Saab suspended all vehicle warranties at the time of its bankruptcy.

It remains to be seen how many of those prospective buyers will actually turn into Saab owners, but the automaker’s U.S. dealers could certainly use the business. There are still about 2,200 vehicles in Saab’s U.S. inventory, or the equivalent of a 221-day supply.

On the weekend of January 14-15, 2012, there were about 100 gatherings and convoys around the world in support of Saab. "We are many, we are Saab"...

On the weekend of January 14-15, 2012, there were about 100 gatherings and convoys around the world in support of Saab. "We are many, we are Saab" was coined as the motto. In Seattle, there were several gatherings.

The largest gathering was organized by the Northwest Saab Owners Club meeting in Fife, near Tacoma, Washington, USA. A convoy then drove two to three hours south to Portland to join a meeting at Atomic Auto. In Seattle, there appears to have been one or two smaller gatherings, of which I participated in one.

As mentioned on Facebook, Saabsunited.com, Outside Saab, and Saabworld.net, there was also a meeting what was described as starting in the Target parking lot, which is a large department store. Upon driving there, I noticed another Saab 9-3 driving in the opposite direction of the street. The driver was looking around as if looking for others. The Facebook and Saabunited comment mentioned driving past Saab of Bellevue to the nearby Arby's roast beef restaurant. Perhaps, that car drove from Target, past the dealer, to Arby's?

I read about the planned drive by Saab of Bellevue several days ago. I then wrote to Ryan Vanderwel asking about hosting a meeting instead of just driving by. He graciously agreed and encouraged Saabs to stop by.

I arrived at Target few minutes late and found a couple in a 1990 Saab 900 turbo convertible. Part of the problem of locating others is that there is no Target parking lot but a multi-level parking garage. It was snowing, an uncommon event in Seattle. After driving around the garage, we began driving as a convoy across the I-90 bridge to the eastern suburb of Bellevue to Saab of Bellevue. While driving there, a green 1994-1998 era Saab 900 got caught in the two car convoy but, despite waving at the car, it exited the highway. I'm sure he had no idea about the Seattle convoy and probably thought I was an axe murderer. Braving through falling snow, the convoy was met by Hunter, the brand manager at Park Place Ltd./Saab of Bellevue, a dealer that also sells Aston Martin and Lotus.

It was a pleasure to meet Saab owners, H. and C., whose had interesting stories of their Saabs. In particular, they reminisced about the very small dealer in Bangor, Maine, now closed, that sold them the car more than 20 years ago. The motto of this weekend's gatherings hold true. We are many, we like Saab.
Expensive, but it's around the same price as everywhere else, at least you don't have to pay international shipping.
This is a must if you are going to be tuning your ECU with T5/T7/T8suite, or are just wanting to view, in real-time, the stats rolling out of it alot faster than OBD-II. I also found this article pretty fascinating and am going to try it out when I get my CANUSB; It is how to "open" your SID, so that it will read out some info from the ECU itself.

Ailing Swedish car maker Saab Automobile AB used exaggerated reports circulated by Swedish media that suggested a growing Turkish appetite for a possible acquisition to allegedly attract other interested buyers in international markets, observers argued on Thursday.
Various reports appearing in Swedish media, including state television channel SVT, on Tuesday claimed that officials from the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm have contacted the Swedish Ministry of Industry as well as ailing carmaker Saab Automobile AB about a possible acquisition. Sources said Saab was trying to create an “artificial agenda” in a move to also inject optimism into the troubled company and its 3,500 workers now facing the threat of losing their jobs. Under heavy debt strain, Saab initially flirted with Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov to invest but failed in this attempt following a veto from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The Swedish firm later tried to coax Chinese Hawtai Motor Group for a takeover but this also failed in May. Their last chance, a take over by Chinese Pang Da Automobile Trade Co. and China Youngman Automobile Group Co., Ltd., was blocked by Saab’s previous owner General Motors. Saab Automobile filed for bankruptcy on Monday, giving up a desperate struggle to keep the lights on.
Saab’s CEO Victor Muller earlier arranged a meeting with Turkish diplomats in Stockholm where he briefed the embassy officials on the latest condition of his company. Turkey’s ambassador to Stockholm Zergün Korutürk confirms the meeting; however, she says “the Swedish media misinterpreted her meeting with Saab CEO to eventually create a “false agenda”. “It is interesting that the media created such an atmosphere when there is no reliable data regarding an agreement with a Turkish company as yet,” she said. Korutürk said the reports sounded like some parties were trying to “market the brand via exaggerated newsreports”. Automotive industry expert Memduh Taşlıcalı, who also writes for the Zaman daily, shares Korutürk’s opinion and adds this was necessary for the government to avoid incorrect allegations.
Taşlıcalı says the reports in the Swedish media which he claimed were “emotionally motivated” had some support from inside Turkey as well. “It is also important to note that some parties in Turkey have tried to convince the government that acquiring Saab would best serve plans for a national car brand and they promoted reports suggesting similar claims. But we all know Saab is not as popular and … such attempts to mislead the public opinion on the Saab issue has failed due to government’s strict stance since the beginning of this story,” he argues.
Government officials have earlier underlined the government had no interests in buying Saab. They added it was the Swedish side who requested Turkish private firms to buy the company. This was acknowledged by Mustafa Koç, the CEO of Turkish Koç Holding, which produces cars jointly with the Ford Motor Company and Italian Fiat in Turkey. Evaluating the issue for reporters in Kayseri, Koç acknowledged that the Swedish car maker asked his company to acquire the brand; however, they “kindly declined this offer.” “We already have a successful partnership with Ford and Fiat; shaking hands with a third brand would not be appropriate at this point. … Why would we buy a bankrupt car brand at the end of the day?” he asserted. Science, Technology and Industry Minister Nihat Ergün told reporters on Wednesday in İstanbul that acquiring Saab would not be a profitable move. Observers argued it would require some $1.5 billion investment for Saab to rise from the ashes.
‘Saab has been meeting Turkish officials since 2009’

Further reports on Thursday revealed Saab’s sale to a Turkish firm has actually been discussed behind closed doors for the past two years. TheSabah daily quoted economy minister Zafer Çağlayan as saying that the Swedish car maker first contacted the Turkish government in 2009 to seek a possible acquisition deal. “When they first came to us two years ago our government evaluated the company’s performance in detail to eventually decide that would not be in Turkey’s best interest to buy this brand,” Çağlayan said. Underlining that the government envisaged the first domestic passenger car brand as “a middle-class vehicle” segment, Çağlayan said Saab appealed to the luxury segment. “Apart from this we saw that they have not invested in technology for almost 15 years.”
The government introduced an Automotive Strategy Paper earlier this year for the production of Turkey’s first national car. Upon the release of the paper the government expects projects from the private industry.

But why are these companies so keen to acquire the deeply troubled Swedish brand? The answer is that Pang Da and Youngman understand the value of a global brand.
Supported by cheap labor, Chinese companies can make products at very low cost, but they are still weak at brand-building.
Weak brands are especially problematic for domestic Chinese automakers because nearly all the global automakers have entered China.
As president of China's largest auto dealer group, Pang Da President Pang Qinghua knows the importance of a strong brand.
Pang Da sells imported Subarus in China. Pang Qinghua knows that even a second-tier global brand such as Subaru commands more respect among Chinese consumers than a domestic brand.
That's why Saab attracts him, and that's why he wants to buy it. "As a brand that has been around from 1947, Saab has a rich cultural heritage and many unique attributes," he told reporters during an industry forum in October.
Youngman -- originally a bus manufacturer -- likewise is dying to acquire a strong brand.
In 2006, the same year that Youngman began producing cars -- company President Pang Qingnian cast his eye on Saab. In 2009, he contacted Saab to express his wish to invest, only to be turned down.
"Saab is a global brand and China is a large market," Pang Qingnian told journalists after signing the acquisition deal with Saab last month. "It is pretty sure that we'll use it to explore the Chinese market."
China's government also has learned to appreciate a strong brand.
In 2010, Beijing overruled Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery's bid for General Motors' Hummer brand. But a year later, the government happily blessed the Saab deal.
Behind its attitude change is the government's recognition that the Chinese automakers must build their brands.
Because of their poor images, domestic brands are losing market share in China to global rivals such as Volkswagen and GM. Moreover, they are years away from competing successfully in Europe and the United States.
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.'s acquisition of Volvo has shown that a Chinese automaker can manage a foreign brand. Now the government believes that other domestic automakers might profit from Geely's example.
But Chinese automakers must move quickly. As global automakers recover from the recession, they have become increasingly protective of their technology.
Opportunities to scoop up a distressed global brand are quickly vanishing. This explains why Pang Da and Youngman are making a last-ditch effort to rescue Saab.
